I suspect that like us here at the ShelterBox USA HQ, your heart was heavy as you awoke late last week to see that a tornado outbreak affected lives across our country’s Midwest and parts of the south. A chain of storms that continued into the weekend.  As an Ambassador, we thought you may like to know what action we take when disasters impact our home country.  As was the case last week and through this weekend, we reach out to the most affected state and local emergency operations centers/managers to introduce the ShelterBox (more…)

Read Across America

Read Across America was a great success on Saturday.  Five of us read to over 200 children at our rocker – Rob, Oktay, Barb, Marsha and her friend.  Thanks also to Lou for transporting the rockers.
We need to find a place for the rocker – each year we give it to an organization, or school, or library in the CU area.  Recent recipients are The Urbana Free Library, Heart and Hands Daycare, the Swan Center, and Crisis Nursery.  I would like for you all to make suggestions and I will make the arrangements so email me with your ideas. -Barb

Bowl for Kid’s Sake

Tonight we will be together for a good cause, a cause that needs us involved for today and for the future.
The Late Nite Sunrise bowling team will be rolling for the kids in Big Brothers & Big Sisters.
It’s also a night for all who can, to be together, share a laugh, share a remembrance.
Tonight, Friday, March 2 – 7pm at the Western Bowl in Champaign.
Stop by for as long as you can, even if just to say hi. I’ll have a make-up sheet there too!
Thanks,
Paul

In Memory of KENT SMITH

As you all know by now, our dear friend, fellow Rotarian and ShelterBox USA Ambassador, Kent Smith passed away just a few days after he was on our
January Development Committee Conference call.  Kent has been an active member of the Development Committee since it was created by our Board.
Kent had great ideas which he often enthusiastically shared with me during long discussions on the phone followed up by emails.  We finally met face
to face at last year’s Annual Conference in Washington, DC. We spent a lot of time together exploring ways the Development Committee could continue
to mature into a stronger, more versatile and productive component of the USA Board. (more…)

Madagascar Disaster

A category four cyclone hit the eastern shores of Madagascar in the early hours of the morning on February 14, bringing sustained strong winds of around 140 miles per hour and torrential rains. ShelterBox has been monitoring Cyclone Giovanna’s movement and has mobilized a response team that is expected to arrive on the island on February 17 to assess the need for emergency aid.

This will be ShelterBox’s second deployment to Madagascar, an island in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa, which is prone to cyclones and tropical storms, especially in the rainy season between February and May.
