ANNOUNCEMENTS
(notes courtesy of the venerable Neal Chamberlain)

CUSR meeting began with a moment of silence for the death of two CUSR members’ family.  Jan Penwell, Alan’s wife, passed away this past week. Diana Dummitt’s brother also passed away recently.  Our prayers, sympathy and condolences go out to the Penwell and Dummitt families in this time of grief.

Jeff announced that all C/U Rotary clubs are being recruited to serve as Salvation Army Bell Ringers.  Our club is scheduled for December 15 and we need volunteers to serve one hour shifts as a bell ringer.

Jeff also announced that with the contributions of district members plus the district’s matching funds our district was able to contribute more than $25,000 to Polio Plus.

Jeff announced that applications for the essay contest are due by March 15th.  Encourage youth you are acquainted with to enter the essay contest.

Saturday November 10th is our club’s next Eastern Illinois Food Bank Foodmobile volunteer opportunity. We will meet at 9am at the De Land Fire Station, 215 N.Highway Ave., De Land Illinois. We will help unload the EIFB truck, set up the tables and food and help distribute the food. Food distribution takes about 2 hours and then we help load up the truck of any leftover food. We should be done by 1:00pm st the latest. It’s a great way to see how our many hours of re-packing really helps out.

PROGRAM

The program for the day was a presentation by AIESEC members.  The AIESEC organization was represented by the following students: Jigar Shan, Dallas, Tx., Junior in Mechanical Engineering;  Nisha Mistra, Naperville, Il., Junior in Economics;  SherryWary, Buffalo Grove, Il., Junior in Accounting;  Joly Wu, DeKalb, Il., Sophomore in Accounting;  Akbar Agha, Pakistan, Junior in Mechanical Engineer; Maru Edakara, San Francisco, Ca., Junior in Pre Med.; Adam Rock, Peoria, Il., Senior in Marketing and International Business.

AIESEC is an organization which provides opportunities for young people to find internships which will lead to development of their leadership potential.  AIESEC has representation in 113 countries, in which they have facilitated 1500 international exchanges.

AIESEC’s most notable endeavor is a program in which they provide an organization which has shown interest in hiring an intern with a list of qualified international candidates.  The organization can then select the most promising candidate and AIESEC arranges an interview.  By this method AIESEC functions as a placement service; the organization which hires the intern pays a small fee.  AIESEC then provides the selected candidate with insurance during the tenure intern’s employment.

The presenters emphasized that CUSR Rotarians can help our respective companies/organizations and “the youth of the world” by getting involved, by spreading the word and by hiring an AIESEC intern.  We will find that the diversity will benefit our organization(s) and also provide an opportunity for a youth who desires to grow in their chosen field/career.
