PROGRAM

 

Our annual C-U Sunrise Rotary Holiday Party featured music (see below), a visit from Santa, some Santa-related trivia (those darn Philadelphia fans!), and general holiday merriment.  Thanks to all who made this event such a fun and joyous time!

 

 

MUSIC PROGRAM

 

Marilyn Marshall and Danda Beard introduced us to members of the Baroque Artists of Champaign Urbana.  BACH is Champaign Urbana’s premier chamber choir, founded by Rotarian Chester Alwes in 1996.   

 

BACH hosts a full annual concert schedule and numerous unique events each season.  They also host the annual Young Baroque Artist Competition for high-school aged musicians.

 

BACH is currently welcoming new singers and donors.  For audition information or to join their mailing list, contact BACH at info@baroqueartists.org.

Our holiday party is Thursday, December 19^th (this week!). There are custom omelets for breakfast so we would like to have everyone come around 6:30 a.m. so all can be served.

 

In the membership contest, the Porridge Packs and the Gurts are not doing so well so they need to step up their game plan.

 

Diana has distributed cards on the table to complete for contact information of guests that you bring.

 

Paul sent an email to members about the college football bowl games. It is the same deal as last year that half of the pot goes to Sunrise Charitable Foundation, and the winner(s) takes the rest. Please participate.

 

 

Program

 

Molly Delaney was our guest speaker on December 12^th, and she is vice president of development for Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Many of us have helped with repacks and mobile food distribution so it was informative to get an update from Molly.

 

The Eastern Illinois Foodbank exists to alleviate hunger in eastern Illinois by providing a reliable source of food for the hungry through cooperation with a network of food pantries and agencies. It distributes foods in 18 Illinois counties from Livingston in the north to Clay in the south. Last year over 10.5 million pounds were distributed with the help of staff and 2,100 volunteers.

 

In 2018, there was over $12.3 million in contributed food to EIFB plus $1.4 million in cash donations so this is a large operation.  One in 8 people in eastern Illinois struggle with food insecurity, including 1 in 6 children. The Foodbank does not directly serve clients, but food is provided to agencies like food pantries, soup kitchens, snack programs, and shelters who serve the hungry. Through agencies and programs, Eastern Illinois Foodbank supplied food to more than 58,000 people a month last year.

PROGRAM

 

Bob introduced John-Paul Buzard, President and Artistic Director of Buzard Pipe Organ Builders, LLC of Champaign.   John-Paul has a Master’s of Music degree in Organ and Church Music from Northwestern University and a Master Organ Builder Certificate from the American Institute of Organ Builders.  He is a member of several national and international organ and organ builder societies.

 

John-Paul’s wife Linda is the organist and choirmaster at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine in Champaign.   Along with the Baroque Artists of Champaign, she will perform at our upcoming holiday party.   Their son Stephen is the organist and choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago and their daughter Katie recently completed a Master’s degree in  voice from the Royal College of Music in London.

 

Bob recently rented one of six apartments above the Buzard Organ Company, located at 112 W. Hill in Champaign.   It is housed in a converted turn-of-the century building that was once the Woman’s Town Club.  

 

The Buzard Organ Company has a staff of 20.  They are known locally for having renovated the organ at the Virginia Theater and for having built the one in his home parish of St. John the Devine.

 

John-Paul explained that no two organs look alike or sound alike.  Each builder has his own style.  There are French, German and English organ building styles.  His style is after the one used at King’s College Cambridge.

 

After the Oklahoma City bombing, his company built a new organ for the nearby St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral. 

 

In 2003, they built an organ with 87 ranks of pipes for All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.   In 2005, they built an organ for St. Bede’s Catholic Church at the entrance to the colonial district in Williamsburg, VA.  St. Bede’s and the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church have a covenant to worship and do community service together, so in 2006, the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church asked the Buzard Company to build them an organ, too.

 

In 2008, they built an organ in the form of a stylized Celtic Cross for the Second Presbyterian Church in Bloomington.  When building an organ for St. Bridget Catholic Church in Richmond, VA in 2013, they uncovered a stained glass window that had been hidden for forty years!

 

The company built an organ for Central Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2018.  The former music director from Holy Cross Church in Champaign is now music director there.

 

Buzard built an organ for the St. Vincent Archabbey in LaTrobe, PA.  That basilica seats 1,500 people.  Closer to home, they built an organ for Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Carmel, Indiana.

December 14: A sign-up sheet was passed around for volunteers for this year’s Salvation Army bell ringing Champaign Walmart on North Prospect.

 

Darrell presented a chart showing the results of our membership drive and encouraged all to invite more possible new members.

 

PROGRAM

This week’s speaker was Professor Stephanie Ceman, Associate Professors of Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Ceman received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin in Bacteriology and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in Genetics. She was a Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Chicago in Immunology and a Postdoctoral fellow at Emory University in Atlanta, where she began her work on Fragile X syndrome. She was promoted to research assistant professor at Emory University.

She was hired in 2003 at UIUC, and is now an associate professor with affiliations with the Neuroscience Program, Beckman Institute and the Institute for Genomic Biology. She is also faculty in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine.

Dr. Ceman’s research focuses on understanding how protein regulation in the brain participates in learning and memory. Professor Ceman’s presentation focused on her current work with Fragile X Syndrome, the most common form of mental retardation in which a protein required for normal cognition is absent. Engineered gene modification is being studied as a way to repair and reverse inherited cognitive disabilities, including autism.

 

SPECIAL NOTE 1 – CU Sunrise Christmas Party – December 19

– We will have an omelet station, so a little earlier starting time is a good idea to allow people to partake of the omelet station.  The meeting will start at the regular 7:00 time.

– Bring children and grandchildren. To help make certain that Santa has an appropriate gift, please let us know names and ages and a short list of what kind of gifts they might like.

– Let us know if guests will be in attendance so we can plan food and tables.

– If you possess a “festive holiday sweater”, please feel free to wear it that day.  If enough people participate, there may even be a special prize for the sweater voted “most festive”.

– This year we will have a “Dirty Santa” game near the end of the party.  For those of you who haven’t played “Dirty Santa”, you bring a wrapped gift, and numbers are drawn to determine the order of participants.  First participant selects and unwraps a gift.  Next participant can either steal the gift, or choose another gift.  This continues until the last gift is unwrapped, at which time the first participant is given a chance to steal or keep the gift they now possess.  Usually there’s a limit of 3 “steals” for any particular gift.  If you plan to participate, please let me know.  Please limit the gift to a maximum of a $20 value.  Feel free to bring something from home you’ve been dying to get rid of!

 

SPECIAL NOTE 2 – CU Sunrise Foundation Bowl Pick ‘Em Contest

Now that Illinois IS back in the bowl picture this year’s Foundation Bowl Contest will be a bit more interesting. The first bowl game is Friday December 20th. Paul will be emailing information. We split the pot 50/50, half to the winner’s and half to the CU Foundation. Last year we raised $100, just for guessing bowl game outcomes.
