Rod announced that we still need bowlers for the Bowl A Thon on March 6 and readers for Read Across America on March 7. Please contact Rod if you would like to participate.
Tod announced that Sola Gratia Farm will be having a fundraiser at 7:30pm on February 24th, 2015 at The Art Theater. The film “Place at the Table” will be shown. The tickets are $10 at the door.
Andrew announced (to himself since he was unable to attend last week’s meeting) that a free screening of the documentary Awaken The Dragon will take place at 7:00pm on Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015 at The Art Theater. The film deals with a group of people who take on an interesting activity in order to reclaim their lives after surviving cancer. Admission is free, and donations will go to provide comfort items to patients receiving cancer treatment at Carle. See here for more details: http://www.awakenthedragon.com/

Bob introduced Dr. James Leonard, President and CEO of Carle Foundation. Dr. Leonard is originally from Morris, IL, and his parents still live there. He attended the University of Illinois School of Medicine and is certified in Family Practice. He joined Carle in 1984 and became CEO in 2000. He is the immediate past President of the Illinois Hospital Association’s Board of Directors and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Hospital Association.
Carle Foundation is the not-for-profit parent of an integrated health system with includes Carle Foundation Hospital, Carle Physician Group and Health Alliance Medical Plans, with over 6,000 employees. It is ranked number 14 in Illinois by US News and World Report. Dr. Leonard was excited to announce that Carle has just been named a “Magnet” Facility. He explained that only about 6% of U.S. hospitals attain that designation.
Dr. Leonard talked about three topics, the state of healthcare in general, healthcare at Carle specifically and the proposal to bring a college of Medicine to Champaign Urbana.
He attributes the increased cost of healthcare to the technological and pharmaceutical advances that have increased life expectancy. Decisions are being made now to implement a transition from a “fee for service” model to “value based care’. His description of “value based care’ is “putting less money in the pot and getting a better result while giving more people access to health care. He said, “We are asking the staff at Carle to deliver medicine in a way that they were not trained to do, as a team based effort.”
By whom, how and where care is delivered will change. Appointments may be on the computer, not face to face. According to Dr. Leonard, “Today, accountability at the individual level is almost nothing.” and that needs to change, too.
In the last 10-15 years, Carle has changed. They made the decision to be a “vertically integrated” organization rather than follow the “horizontally integrated” model followed by most U.S. hospitals that provide service at more than one hospital.” Carle Hospital has gone from serving people from a 50 mile radius to serving people from a 200 mile radius, from as far away as Kentucky.
“Formerly, Carle served indigent people without Medicaid free of charge. Now with ACA, more people have signed up for Medicaid, a number of them in the middle poverty range, ie, up to 250% of poverty level, get a little assistance with premiums. They are insured, but the deductibles have changed. These people used to get free coverage at Carle, but now they have to pay a deductible.”
Medicaid is moving to managed care in Illinois. Dr. Leonard also likes Medicare Advantage as an alternative to traditional Medicare because “It brings money to the table and allows institutions to get the money up front.”
Dr. Leonard also believes that bringing the College of Medicine to Champaign Urbana could be a game changer for our community and downstate Illinois. “It may be the only thing that brings new growth to Champaign Urbana.”
