Dave Krchak introduced our CU Sunrise scholarship winner DaNeya
Burnett, a Central High School May graduate, who will attend Parkland in
nursing starting this summer. She was accompanied by her grandmother.

Oktay announced that our Rotarians of the month are our three District
6490 award winners: Mary, Gary and Larry. We congratulated Larry on
his honor as the District Rotarian of the Year with a standing
ovation.

President Bruce announced two upcoming golf outings on Friday, June 1,
– one fundraiser for the Hoopeston Rotary Club and one for the
Sullivan club.

We are searching for a box of our CU Sunrise Rotary flags. If anyone
locates them, please get them to Bruce.

Gary announced that June 9-16 will be Big Green Box Week in CU. There
will be a Shelter Box set up for 24 hours and he will be asking for
volunteers from all of the seven or eight clubs involved this year.

May bucket money will go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

PROGRAM

Our speaker, Dan Sholem is a graduate of Central High School,
Southern, and St. Louis University in Finance. He is the owner of DR
Sholem and Co., based here in Champaign, specializing in Equipment
Financing.

In 1990 he began his career with the Pegasus Capitol Organization in
San Francisco financing airline equipment and moved onto assist
companies in Silicon Valley.

Dan illustrated the”gotchas” in leasing with examples. In order to
not add debt to their balance sheets companies lease with a low
monthly payment. But, due to technology improvements or in the case of
buried earth dome equipment a company might be forced to “buy out” the
lease.

Dan specializes in solution oriented leases so that companies can
negotiate for flexibility. His focus is on helping CFO’s answer
questions such as equipment use, company assets, etc. to determine the
best decisions in acquiring equipment.

He admitted that inspecting equipment – gadgets and toys, was one of
the things he likes most about his job.

PROGRAM: An Overview of U.S. Bankruptcy Filings

Robert M. Lawless, Professor
Co-Director, Illinois Program on Law, Behavior and Social Science

Robert Lawless (rlawless@illinois.edu), professor of law and co-director of the Illinois Program on Law, Behavior and Social Science, specializes in bankruptcy, consumer credit, and business law. Professor Lawless has published numerous articles on these topics, most all of which use empirical methodology to better understand legal phenomena. His book, Empirical Methods in Law, written with University of Illinois law professors Jennifer K. Robbennolt and our own Thomas S. Ulen, was recently released by Aspen Publishing. In addition to a course in empirical methods, he teaches in the areas of bankruptcy and commercial law.

Professor Lawless’ program covered areas of personal bankruptcy trends from 1946 through 2010.

Average per adult debt (adjusted):

1946: $900.00

2010: $10,000

Debt is growing much faster than personal income.

Landmark (and unanimous) 1978 U.S. Supreme Court decision: Marquette Nat. Bank of Minneapolis v. First of Omaha Service Corp.

This decision profoundly changed the debt scenario in the U.S.

Bankruptcy filings per 1,000 adults:

1946: less than 1

2010: greater than 7

Age 65 and older is the largest growing segment of bankruptcy filings because people are living longer and are willing to borrow more. The average age to file bankruptcy is 42.

Divorce, job interruptions and medical expenses are the (3) primary reasons for filing bankruptcy.

Jeff is looking for a replacement for Andrew on the New Generations committee for next year. It’s a great gig, ask Andrew for details.

Our speaker last week was Brian Nudelman, associate professor of humanities at Parkland College. Brian coordinates campus-wide service learning and volunteerism. These efforts include co-creating the Garden Hills Homework Club with Champaign Schools; leading Parkland’s Service-Learning Advisory Council; and working to get students, faculty, and staff out in the community working alongside other non-profit partners and area schools. Brian also helped enable dental hygiene program trips to Tennessee and India.

Brian has organized and guided some 120 students through nearly 2,500 service learning hours at 11 agencies and non-profits in Champaign-Urbana. Community engagement not only integrates Parkland with those needing help, but it is a life-skill for students as they move into their careers. To learn more about the Service Learning Program, go to their website:

Hayden Noel presented a program on marketing and consumer behavior. Dr. Noel worked as an account executive for a New York advertising firm and in 2002 earned his PhD from the University of Florida. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the College of Business at the University of Illinois. Giving several examples of companies who continued to advertise in poor economic times, he cited the reasons for such positive results. These companies changed their advertising strategy to fix the times and took advantage of less competition, lower costs to advertise and increased their market share. Hayden also gave examples of those who stop advertising in hard times and how they took a longer time to recover the market they had lost. Hayden noted several projects he has personally worked on such as the popular “Milk Mustache” and the not so popular Dodge Neon driving through the cornfields as the corn popped. Hayden provided several insights to consumer information processing, consumer memory and the impact of culture on the consumer. He also warned Mary Hodson not to drive quite so fast down Kirby Ave.

Announcements (notes courteous of the unconventional and unorthodox Paul Conforti)

Jeff Van Buren: New board member needed for the New Generations seat as Andrew needed to withdraw due to job commitments. Resident wiseguy Neil Chamberlain joked that it was about time Andrew finished school and found a job.

Tom Hodson – Champaign West

5/11/2012: Party Bus / Scavenger Hunt @ 5pm

5/19/2012: Orpheum Children’s Science Museum Building Fair 10am – 2pm

Speaker: Carl Burkybile – Director: Caring for Kenya (CFK)

www.caringforkenya.org

Carl is a Casey native, grew up on a grain and livestock farm, has a Masters degree in agricultural education from the University of Illinois and an advanced certification in vocational education. Carl taught high school for 26 of 32 teaching years at Rantoul H.S. In 2000 he was named outstanding agriculture teacher in Illinois.

In 2009 Caring for Kenya was awarded the Champaign-Urbana International Humanitarian Award for their work helping people with food production, education, health care and water.

Carl is preparing for his 9th trip to Kenya this June. He maintains a close relationship with the Rantoul Rotary Club. In the early 90’s Carl and his family hosted two Rotary exchange students (Moyses from Brazil and Kepa from France).

According to the World Water Organization over 80% of Kenya’s 40 million people have no access to clean water.

CFK has provided 145 water filters for families in Kenya who get their water from streams or shallow wells. In December 2011 CFK ordered another 100 filters which will be distributed by Carl in June. In addition to removing solids, these filters remove 99.9% of the bacteria as well as parasites from the water.

The $50 filter will filter 1 million gallons of water before it wears out.

CFK also works closely with the people providing education and training to help people improve their “food security” including teaching simple, affordable and sustainable farming techniques such as composting, use of raised beds, drip irrigation, minimum tillage, mulching and crop rotation.

Carl’s presentation was accompanied by an informative and engaging slip show including work that is in progress digging deep water wells.

Carl is accepting donations for these worthwhile projects that he personally administers.

The Caring for Kenya website is well done and worth a visit. www.caringforkenya.org

A hearty group of 9 cleaned up the Decker garden on Saturday. Baran, Johnson (Larry and Judy) , Perry, Van Buren, Chambers, Kerins, Chamberlain and Simpson are all proud owners of a makeup. Although the garden looked good from the street, it did need a lot of cleanout. Special thanks to Neal who hauled away all the refuse. There is no truth to the rumor that he was last seen headed down I-74 at about 80 mph with all the weeds blowing out. Stay tuned for further opportunities for service at the garden, and feel free to visit, it’s a great place for a picnic lunch.
