Announcements: (notes courteous of the unconventional and unorthodox Paul Conforti)

Barb Lintner: Read Across America, Saturday March 3 @ Lincoln Square

Paul Conforti: Bowl For Kids Sake, Friday March 2, 7-9pm Western Bowl, Champaign

Program:

Our speaker was Michael Hirschi (Champaign West), a Professor and Assistant Dean at the University of Illinois College of Engineering. However, Mike was here to talk about Boy Scouts of America (BSA), scouting in general, and the Prairielands Council in particular.

Mike is the father of 2 Eagle Scouts and participates in the operation of the Prairielands Council in a number of ways over the years,

• 1 in 4 US boys are Boy Scouts

• 4 in100 scouts will make Eagle designation

• 75% of leaders in US society have Scouting in their past

• 21 of the 24 men who have walked on the moon were Boy Scouts

Mike asked us to encourage our children or granchildren to consider Scouting. He also asked that those interested contact the Prairielands council to volunteer in a number of ways, both men and women. Businesses and service organizations can also consider sponsoring a Boy Scout troop.

Support can also be made by attending the Mountain Film Festival, March 6th at Parkland College (more info at the link below).

Look for Boy Scouts selling popcorn and batteries and support them by purchasing one of the other or both.

Mike distributed a brochure about the Prairielands Council and ways in which those interested can provide both financial or volunteer support.

For additional information please visit www.prairielandsbsa.org

February 23 has been designated “Illinois Rotary Day” with every club being requested to perform a service project on that day. Our project is in the planning stages…stay tuned….

Tod Satterthwaite and Dex Conway presented information about the Sola Gratia Farm. St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Urbana has just begun a community supported agricultural project. With approximately 5 acres of adjacent property they are starting a fresh vegetable program in which share holders will receive locally grown produce. Tod serves on the committee with the church and Dex will do all the planning and work to get this program “in the ground”. Dex is an Indiana University graduate and has worked with other CSA projects and St. Matthews has hired him to run this project. Any one can purchase a seasonal half share($300) or full share($500) and will receive fresh produce on a regular basis during the growing season. The share holders with share both the bounty and the risks of farming. The mission of this project is to produce locally grown, high quality natural foods with the Church donating 10% of the produce to local hunger programs. Using responsible farming techniques,no synthetic chemicals, producing little or no agricultural run off, minimizing transportation costs, and using only a minor amount of packaging are only a few of the advantages of community supported agriculture. Tod noted that this project is in the very early stages and more information will be given later.

Read Across America, the Reading Event at Lincoln Square will be held on Saturday, March 3 from 10am to 1pm. CU Sunrise will have a rocker there and we need readers to share books with children. We would like to have at least 2 readers each hour. Let me know if you can read from 10 – 11, from 11- 12, or from 12-1 that day. I’ll announce this again on Thursday and will continue to bug you by email until we get all the slots filled.

It is a great opportunity and if you aren’t familiar with what happens that day see the photos on the “Read Across America Sat. March 3, 2012″ page on Facebook. There are pictures of the 30 booths, Rotary Reading Rockers and other featured events from past years.

We will also need to choose a location for our rocker after that day, a school or preschool, library, social service agency, etc. I’m also looking for someone to pick up the rocker at 1pm on March 3 and deliver it to the location of our choice. If you read from 12-1 you can just load it in your van and take it away.

Email me and sign up now for this great event. -Barb

Announcements (courtesy of the stylish, striped-tie-wearing Allan Penwell)

Tod Satterthwaite is our newest member, and he introduced himself to our club. He’s a Uni grad but is just now finishing up his bachelor’s. In the meantime Todd has owned Todd & John’s, was in the Peace Corps for two years, and was mayor of Urbana for 12 years. Since being mayor, his sister and he have owned the concessions, Kickapoo Landing, at Kickapoo State Park. Welcome Tod!

Program

Our speaker last Thursday was Bobbi Scholze who is the chair of the Health Professions department at Parkland.

There are 20 different programs offered in her department including dental, nursing, radiology, dietary, veterinary, and surgical. Classes are offered at the main campus but also on North Mattis. Graduates can expect annual salaries up to $75,000, and most find jobs immediately after finishing their studies.

While part of the program is traditional lecture, much of the studies are hands-on such as the dental lab which is open to the public. There is also a state of the art simulation lab where a dummy is able to show different responses such as pain, stroke, heart attack, and others. Students are taught early recognition of life-like symptoms. Parkland has also teamed up with the University of Illinois medical school on surgical techniques and procedures which train student nurses and doctors at the same time.
