Champaign West Rotary will have a reception and a viewing of “The Children’s Home” on April 5th from 6 to 8 pm to kick off their New Futures Scholarship Campaign. “The Children’s Home” is a video dealing with educational opportunities for the children of Azacualpa, Honduras. Betsy Barnicke, Oncology Clinical Trials Coordinator for Carle Hospital, presented information regarding Carle’s Cancer Research Program. The National Cancer Institute began to help fund Carle’s cancer research in 1983. Carle is currently the largest of the three community clinical oncology programs in Illinois outside of Chicago.The Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) is a network for testing and validating medical interventions against cancer, and for delivering the benefits of scientific discovery to the public and community physicians. The network increases involvement of oncologists and other health professionals in NCI-approved clinical trials as full research partners; improves the quality of cancer care in local communities by disseminating research findings; and boosts participation of minority and under served populations in cancer clinical trials.
National recognized and with affiliations with recognized hospitals and clinics, Carle’s Cancer Center employs approximately 12 Oncologists, 26 nurses, a dedicated cancer medication pharmacy, 22 member researchers and administration. Carle averages 100 clinical trials each year with 270 people taking part in trials. With an active patient advocate program Carle’s motto is “Today’s standard of care was yesterday’s clinical trial.
