PROGRAM

Les introduced our speaker this morning, Todd Gleason. Todd is with the College of ACES here at UIUC and has been the voice of agriculture in the State of Illinois since 1984. He currently can be heard daily on his half hour show starting at 2:00pm on WILL radio along with numerous other avenues where he reports on all aspects of  agriculture.

Todd works hard to present unbiased reporting with information on everything dealing with his farm reports. He noted he has always been a non-commercial broadcaster, and he is proud to be part of the history of WILL Radio. WILL Radio reporting started back in 1922.

This morning’s message centered on how Todd has continued to improve over his 40+ years, including the best ways to produce and deliver his agriculture messages. He gave several examples of the ways he has made his work more efficient, faster and more focused for his listeners. Starting with one of the first laptops so he could work from home to now the use of a phone, camera with monopod and laptop he can produce a total presentation anywhere and send it to the WILL studio for broadcasting. He has begun experimenting with AI to put his information into a “Broadcast” mode.

Todd finished with answering various questions from the group on the history of tariffs to the importance of Pot Ash. While touching on tariffs and farm subsidies, Todd noted that 48% of Illinois’ corn and soybeans production is shipped out of the country.

PROGRAM

Charlie introduced Mitch Marlow who is the Sales & Public Relations manager for the Virginia Theatre, Champaign Park District. With a background in music performance and management, Mitch presented information about the upcoming activities this year at the Virginia Theatre.

The Virginia Theatre opened in 1921 in downtown Champaign presenting theatrical entertainment with vaudeville acts and movies. Over its 104 years it has had many restoration projects and numerous updates. Currently, the Virginia Theatre is closed as it updates its back stage Fly System. This rigging system will be computerized to hoist and move the curtains, lights, scenery, stage effects and even people. This current work was originally scheduled to be completed in April for the upcoming Ebert Film Festival but is progressing ahead of schedule so Mitch is looking at possible scheduling small events in to fill in the dates before the Ebert Festival.

Many events for the year are being considered and scheduled. Several were mentioned with exact events and ticket sales to be announced at a later date. The Virginia Theatre will continue to provide special showings and events this year. Special events will again include past shows such as “Art House”, “Rewind” and the “News Gazette Golden Age” movie events. The emphasis this year will be to add audience interaction with the movie to make it more of an event. Also, community events will again take place in the Virginia Theater like the family favorite “Pens to Lens” in which local students write the script and local film companies produce the movie.

Mitch answered several questions from the club. He mentioned sound systems, what certain acts need and want, future updates to projector systems, concession area expansion, audience circulation improvements, and adding various video screens.

Mitch also noted the need for community volunteers as the Virginia Theatre relies on volunteers to assist with the essential tasks of ushers, taking tickets, crowd control, and greeters. If you are interested in being a volunteer, sign up at thevirginia.org/volunteer/.
