Program
Last Thursday we welcomed our speaker, Gail Rost, who is executive director of Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation, and she is also president-elect of Urbana Rotary.
The Foundation was begun in 1990 and is committed to enriching the community by encouraging educational initiatives and facilitating excellence in education in the public schools of Champaign-Urbana. Over $1,000,000 has been funded to our schools through various programs.
This community not-for-profit organization has provided dollars and benefits to our schools, and one of them is CUScholars. It is a new program in our local high schools for all students to meet the challenges that kids face. This program prepares students for options after they graduate by requiring participation in a rigorous academic program, volunteer requirements, excellence in attendance, and development of the skills needed to successfully move into adulthood.
Students are mentored through high school and have to take 4 years of English and math, 3 years of laboratory science, and 2 years of a foreign language. The program disciplines the students and prepares them for training beyond high school in life skills such as financial literacy and community participation. CUScholars needs many volunteers to help the students, and if you are interested, call Gail.
