PROGRAM
Joe introduced Tom Kacich as this morning’s speaker. Tom received a warm welcome as he is a person who is well loved in our community for his many years of service to our area through his work as a journalist with the News Gazette. Tom is known for his wealth of historical knowledge about our towns and state.
This morning’s topic was a historical review on how our area and state voted on presidential elections and the changes that have occurred. Starting with Abraham Lincoln, Illinois historically had voted Republican for presidential candidates with a few exceptions from 1865 into the 1960s. Tom gave examples of the voting result percentages for many elections.
Today, Illinois is known as a strong democratic voting state as the higher populated cities carry the state over the rural districts which continue to vote Republican. Champaign-Urbana and Champaign County are now voting strongly for democratic candidates with some of the candidates running unopposed. Tom noted how Champaign County has voted with the state for several decades now. For the elections in 2016 and 2020 the republican presidential candidate received 36% and 35% of the vote in Champaign County, the lowest percentage ever.
