Program

Julie Melton, Director of Marketing & Development for the Eastern Illinois Food Bank, presented information regarding what the food bank does, who it serves and what are the future activities. EIFB stores and distributes food with the goal to to alleviate hunger in East Central Illinois. With a current staff of 20, it relies heavily on volunteers and donations for getting the food distributed. EIFB distributed 7.3 million pounds of dry food and 1.5 million pounds of fresh produce last year. The current need in our area is 17 million pounds and EIFB will continue to try and meet that demand. The three main methods for food distribution for EIFB is to deliver food to the local agencies in the area, to provide Food Mobile service to those areas in the region lacking in agencies and now a new program are the food pantries at schools.

This month is “Hunger Action Month” for EIFB with planned fund raising activities this month and thru the end of this year. September 26th is an open house at the Food Bank with tours of their facility and the recent addition to their cold storage capacity. A “Farm Dinner” fundraiser will take place on October 6th and a “Drive By” money donation activity with be take place on Dec. 12th in association with WCIA.

Julie thanked our club for our past support noting that they have calculated that our Club’s volunteer hours have contributed to the serving of 164,251 meals.  She hopes we will continue our support in the future.
