Our 25th Anniversary Celebration will be on June 15th at the Illinois Terminal. Time is 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Cost will be $25.00 which includes dinner. Rob Patton is work on entertainment.
On Thursday, May 16th several Rotarians and their friends and family helped out at the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. Mary, Phyllis, Laura and her daughter, Larry and Judy Johnson, Neil and a visiting exchange student, and Ed added pretzel re-packing to our club’s repertoire of food re-packing.
Program
Our program featured David and Dorothy Deem who are upholsterers. David has been in the business for 60 years which includes 25 years at Beck’s Country Store and 25 years as a master upholsterer at the U of I. David also has taught in the adult education program at Parkland, and Ed and Penn have been in his classes. Dorothy and David work side by side in the business and are dedicated to their craft.
David mentioned that he has re-upholstered the leather lounge chairs and sofa in the Illini Union, and it pains him to walk through and see students with their feet laid out over his work. One of his favorite projects was working with Judy Ikenberry to reupholster dining room chairs at the president’s house. Judy had several people help needlepoint all of the birds of Illinois, and David installed them on the seats.
David and Dorothy gave us a little Furniture 101.
-There are three types of fabrics: decorative, service, and exterior.
-Protect your fabric with Scotchgard. It helps to fight stains.
-The best furniture seats have springs that are hand-tied together. The other is a no-sag spring that is nailed on the bottom of the seat.
David also demonstrated how to hold tacks in your mouth and use them with a tack hammer. Caution: Do not try this at home.
