PROGRAM
Mary introduced Adam Booher, President of BUMP. Adam and his classmate in the 2011 U of I Engineering class, Jonathan Naber, were intrigued by the Jaipur Foot, an inexpensive rubber foot developed and distributed by the Indian government. The two of them wanted to develop a similarly inexpensive prosthetic arm.
There are an estimated 20-50 million people in the developing world that are missing limbs. But less than 2% of those have access to prosthetic help. Prosthetic limbs cost between $5,000 and $10,000 because they have to be custom fitted.
Today, BUMP, located in the Enterprise Works at the U of I Research Park, makes OpenSocket prosthetic arms that can be fitted and tightened using Jonathan’s and Adam’s ingenious design. The OpenSocket arm can be produced and shipped for $500.
In the U.S. individuals who fit prosthetics are required to be certified. Certification is not required in third world countries. With 45 minutes of training, individuals can fit an OpenSocket arm in 30 minutes and the amputee can leave with a fully functioning limb.
BUMP is trying to build a network of field partners. Jonathan and their friend Dave Krupa are currently setting up relationships with clinics in Central and South America. They are currently working with a Rotarian physician in Honduras. Champaign West Rotary is looking into the possibility of a collaboration with contacts they have made through the Ministerios de Fey de Vida Nueva Children’s Home.
Individuals who would like to become supporters can go to their website, www.madebyBUMP.org.
