Our District Governor, Larry Pennie, will be our speaker this week. Board members are to attend a short meeting with the DG after the regular meeting. All club members, in particular our Club President, are asked to be on their best behavior.

Phillip announced that our club will be helping out the Wesley Food pantry this week. All are asked to sign up on-line at Wesley, info@wesleypantry.org.  They need help for the Thursday night food distribution. If you have not done this activity before, there is an hour long training session at 7:30pm Wednesday.

Program

Mary introduced Christine Catanzarite, Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, OLLI. Chris has been with the University of Illinois since 1997.  She hasserved as the Senior Associate Director of the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities and currently also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies.

The Bernard Osher Foundation supports OLLI at UIUC as well as approximately 115 programs across the United States with more than 113,000 members. OLLI is for members over 50 years old who share the desire for lifelong learning. OLLI started at the University of Illinois in the fall of 2007 with 11 courses and 297 members and has grown to 40 courses and over 1,100 members. OLLI offers courses, programs and activities that include lectures, study groups, travel and even volunteering opportunities.

Current OLLI members here in CU range from age 50 to 96 and all have the desire to enrich their lives, remain intellectually engaged, wish to explore new ideas and may even want to get out of their comfort zone. A variety of classes are offered each session with speakers that are experts in their fields. Instructors have included Nobel Peace Prize winners, best-selling authors, and Chris has taught 2 film-related courses.

The OLLI program here continues to grow and the future is bright as The Bernard Osher Foundation recently awarded a $1 million endowment to the University of Illinois program. Additional information and how to become a member can be found at http://olli.illinois.edu/
