Program

Patricia Barrett Malik, PH.D., Interim Director of the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services(DRES), presented a very informative program dealing with the many services and programs for those University of Illinois students with disabilities. Patricia has served at many positions in her career, has given national presentations and her entire professional career has focused on supporting people with disabilities. The goal being that they reach their highest potential.

As past Director of the University of Illinois Beckwith Center, Pat gave many examples on how the University of Illinois is a world leader in providing support, facilities, and opportunities for disabled students and disabled student athletes. Starting back in 1948, Tim Nugent started a program for those with disabilities at the University of Illinois and, with that start, the University continues to lead the way. Wheel Chair athletes such as Sharon Hedrick, Jean Driscoll and Tatyana McFadden are world famous athletes from the University of Illinois and have added to the growth of programs for the disabled here. This past September the U of I was awarded to be the US Paralympic Training Site.
