Interact Update

The Charity Formal dance will be on March 1st at the Savoy Rec Center. The students are working on a theme and deciding which charity to donate to. We could use some help with possibly two chaperones and any snacks Rotarians would be willing to donate.

The International Fair will be on April 25th from 6:30 to 8:30. The students are super excited about this. I have attached a form if you are interested or possibly to be handed out at your meeting. We are looking for volunteers to run a table or demonstrate some culture. Of course, it would be great if people just came and attended! I am always so proud of these kids.

Program

If not for others, then who?  If not now, then when?

Mallory Davidson and Carly McCrory presented information about the Jamaica Dental Mission. Mallory and Carly are members of Douglas County Rotoract club and are active in the mission trip to Jamaica. Starting 14 years ago with Mallory’s father the mission is to provide dental services to those who need it in Jamaica. The one week program has grown in the number of volunteers and Services. They now provide additional services which include nurses, social workers, non-dental volunteers, computer technicians, medical supplies along with serving the dental needs of 125 people a day. The dental program has expanded from doing tooth extractions to the entire range of dental care.
While based in Tuscola the Jamaica Dental Mission is organizing and combining with an ever larger groups of people and Rotary Clubs from Indianapolis to St. Louis. They have shipped medical and dental supplies and equipment to Jamaica in quantities to fill transport containers. The containers are then planned to be used as site storage and building support. Currently they locate in an elementary school in Jamaica for their volunteer work and have plans to build an addition to the school. The number of Volunteers continues to grow with the main number of volunteers being 20 to 30 year old dental students. Each volunteer dedicates a week of service and pays for their way, room and board at a cost of $1,200 to $1,400 each.

Mallory and Carly are fine examples of “Service above Self” and are a bright future for Rotary. Additional information can be found by contacting Carly McCory at docorataract@gmail.com.
