ANNOUNCEMENTS
(notes provided by the erudite Mary Hodson)

Paul Davis and Sandy Pistole from Champaign Rotary came to promote their club’s upcoming auction event, entitled A Night on Broadway.
David Krchak introduced Central High student Arati Pandel, recipient of the CU Sunrise scholarship, and her counselor Jennifer Stroud. Arati came from Nepal as a Junior and yet she is graduating 22nd in her class.  She will be studying Nursing at Parkland in the fall.   Before she starts the program, she is required to take the CNA course, which costs almost $1,000, which happens to be the amount of the scholarship.  Arati thanked CU Sunrise members for their help.
Jeff welcomed Nick Jungels into the club.  He is Director of Engineering at Cobalt Digital.  Nick was joined by his wife Sarah and daughters Lily, Lucy, Stella and Nora.
The 25th anniversary dinner will be held on June 15 at the Mass Transit Center.   Music will be provided by the Parkland Jazz Ensemble.
Coletta has rejoined the club.   She announced that her daughter’s cancer is responding well to the experimental treatment.
PROGRAM
Kris Young introduced Tom Ramage, President of Parkland College.   Dr. Ramage took questions from the members about Parkland.
Parkland’s current campus was built in 1973 and was short of space almost from the beginning.  The Applied Tech Center opened in September 2012 and a new student services center is being built that will free up room in the present building.   The Student Services Center will open in February.
The traditional community college funding model entailed 1/3 of funding coming from the State, 1/3 from local property taxes, and 1/3 from tuition.  Over the years, State funding has steadily declined, even as enrollment has increased.
High School students in the Parkland District can take Parkland classes at no cost if their high school will teach the Parkland approved course outline.   Between 800 to 1,000 dual enrollment students take Parkland classes each semester.
Parkland credits transfer to the University of Illinois and therefore to all Big Ten schools.  The large South Korean community in Champaign has made students in South Korea aware of Parkland offerings and many students there are taking on-line courses.
There is a waiting list for enrollment in some certificate and two year professional technical programs.   Students graduating with certain one year certificates and two year professional technical degrees have higher average salaries than students who graduate with four year degrees!
Eastern Illinois Foodbank
On Thursday, May 17th, 2013 a group of C-U Sunrise Rotarians and their family and friends gathered to help repack food at the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.  The photo above, submitted by the infamous Ed Perry, shows the group hard at work.  Significant progress was made, but volunteers complained about Mr. Perry’s insistence on listening to Motley Crue while they worked.

Special Presentation

New Rotarian Nick Jungels was recently accepted into the club.  In the photo above Nick is given his Rotary pin by President Jeff Van Buren.
