After getting our attention with a fried clam and sea gull attack story (see photo below), Justin noted that our Central High School Interact Club’s 5K fundraiser will take place Saturday, October 24th, at Crystal lake Park in Urbana.  While our club will be donating, Justin also sent out an email to all members on how to participate as a runner, volunteer or how to give a sponsor donation. Here’s the information:

Andrew has tickets available for the Trek bike raffle to benefit the Kickapoo Rail Trail project with the Champaign County Forest Preserve District (CCFPD).  Tickets are $5 each, and can be purchased up until Thursday, 10/29/15.  See Andrew for tickets.

Jen announced that the annual Fur Ball dinner and auction that benefits the Champaign County Humane Society will take place Friday, October 30, 2015, at the Hilton Garden Inn. See Jen for more information.

Phyllis shared with the club a story about a recent visitor to the Decker Garden while she was working at the garden  last week. Don Decker’s son, Brad, stopped by and thanked her and the club for all the work that has been done honoring his father.  Brad Decker is a semi-retired painter and he offered to paint the piano keys.

Special Note

Several people were shocked this past week to learn of BJ’s close encounter with a seagull.  Fortunately, he survived to tell the tale.  This photo was submitted by BJ as the best example of his near-death experience.

Program

Jen introduced Christine Catanzarite, Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, as our program this morning.

Chris came to the U of I in 1997 via the University of Pittsburgh and Bowling Green State University with her B.A, M.A. and Ph.D. in Film Studies, English, Theatre, and Cultural Studies. She currently serves as Director of OLLI and also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at UIUC. Her priorities at OLLI are curriculum development, increase member engagement and developing innovative partnerships on campus and in the community.

Chris explained that our OLLI program started in 2007 and has continued to grow in the number of participants, the number of courses and provides new and innovative class offerings each year. This fall OLLI offers 42 courses on various subjects that are taught by  exceptional instructors in classes that can vary from small study groups to large lecture classes.

Our OLLI is one of 119 OLLI programs across the nation, and in total OLLI has more than 130,000 members. The membership is open to those 50 years and older who are in the pursuit of learning as a lifelong endeavor.

OLLI classes have recently moved to Downtown Champaign into the M2 Building.  OLLI continues to develop partnerships with the community as well as the campus. Currently there are over 1,200 OLLI members locally and the instructor pool which contains some of the world’s leading experts continues to grow. Chris handed out the latest OLLI brochure(designed by club member Scott Paceley) showing membership information and this Fall’s class offerings.
