ANNOUNCEMENTS
(notes provided by the unconventional and unorthodox Paul Conforti)

We are awaiting the announcement on the Books 2 Prisoners grant. We need to contribute some of our own money to help fund the books. $20 is suggested.  Any Rotarians who would like to be added to their newsletter list can contact Rachel at rachel@books2prisoners.org.

Urbana Rotary is hosting their Whiskey Tasting fundraiser on November 5 at the Atkins Golf Room.

CHEZ Center luncheon with U of I student veterans will be from 11am-1pm on November 9th.. We will be serving the food.  All are welcome to attend; there usually are over 100 students. Andy Bender is in charge.

Greenlight A Vet: Ray Elliott is promoting Greenlight A Vet, especially on Veterans Day November 11th, but also between the dates of November 7-13. Green is the color of hope, renewal and well-being. Greenlight a Vet is a campaign to establish visible national support for our veterans by changing one light to green.  Honor veterans changing one light to green in a visible location – porch, office as a symbol of appreciation and support for our veterans. To help share your support, take a picture of your green light and post it using the hashtag #greenlightavet.

Our Charter Veterans Day Banquet will be November 10. Tickets are $42/person. The event will start at 6pm with a cocktail hour.

The 2022 FRUIT SALE is ON! Fruit is $30 a case; our goal is 400 cases sold. Asking for 100% participation with a 15-case minimum or a donation.  Proceeds will go to the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen and the Four Osprey Mobile Market.  Sample emails have been sent and online order form has been created.

The Eastern Illinois Food Bank repack will run from 5-7pm on November 16.  See the signup sheet at our next meeting.

Winter lights from Thanksgiving to New Years at Prairie Fruit Farms. Groups can sign up to assist. More information to come.

Our annual CU Sunrise Rotary Holiday party will be on December 15th during our regular meeting time. More information to come.   The Newsletter editorial board has heard there’s a good chance that Santa and a full team of reindeer will attend this year’s party (thanks Jarrod for volunteering for reindeer clean-up crew).

PROGRAM

The speaker this week was Dr. Tahir Saif from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.

Aging brings about a decrease in the size of the hippocampus, the learning and memory center of the brain. Dr. Saif has researched the role of exercise in maintaining or even increasing volume in the hippocampus.

Dr. Saif defined exercise as 40 minutes of elevated heart rate (above 125bpm) at lease 3x’s per week.

The hippocampus shrinks in late adulthood, leading to impaired memory and increased risk for dementia. In randomized controlled trials with older adults, it was found that aerobic exercise training increases the size of the hippocampus, leading to improvements in memory. Exercise training increased hippocampus volume by 2%, effectively reversing age-related loss in volume by 1 to 2 years.

It was also learned that increased hippocampus volume is associated with greater serum levels of BDNF, a mediator of neurogenesis. These findings indicate that aerobic exercise training is effective at reversing hippocampus volume loss in late adulthood, which is accompanied by improved memory function.
