PROGRAM

Mary introduced Jim Keiken, Director of the University of Illinois Fire Institute.

The Fire Institute is part of the University of Illinois.  However, they get no funding from the University.   The Institute was formed by State statute in 1925 and they have been training ever since, not even stopping for COVID.   Jim said their simple mission is “helping fire workers do their work”.

Last year, 58,638 emergency workers attended training provided by the Fire Institute.  Fire Institute staff travel all over the State to provide training so that volunteers don’t have to travel to Champaign.   On-line training is also offered.   They focus on basic skills such as rope rescue, structural collapse, Hazardous Materials, trench rescue, dispatcher training, and violent event incident management.  Firefighters learn through repetition of hands-on skills until they acquire muscle memory.  When an emergency occurs, they have a plan in place.

Fire Institute instructors also give school safety and active shooter training to fire fighters, EMTs and school staff around the State of Illinois.   The offer leadership training for officers and chiefs based on military models.  The Fire Institute also has a library with 72,000 volumes.

They train fire fighters from other nations as well.   Last year, a team from Korea came to the Fire Institute.  This year, they will host a team from Brazil.
