PROGRAM
Lisa introduced Rachael Graham as today’s speaker. Rachael is the Director of Operations at Crisis Nursery which is located at 1309 W. Hill St. in Urbana. Rachael stated that the Crisis Nursery serves as an “Island of Safety” dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect by providing 24-hour emergency care for children and support to strengthen families in crisis.
Crisis Nursery opened in 1984 in a wing at Burnham hospital and has continued to grow to meet the needs of the community. They now have a beautiful, 10,000 sq. ft. building which includes four bedrooms, kitchen, interior play areas, library and outdoor play areas.
Crisis Nursery provides emergency care for families in crisis. This care includes dealing with parental stress, mental health, homelessness, medical emergencies, home crisis and domestic violence. Last year the Crisis Nursery impacted the community by providing 23,304 hours of care, working with 476 children, 526 home visits and 710 overnight stays and by reducing the risk of maltreatment, improving parenting skills and decreasing family stress levels.
The need is great and we can help by spreading the word about the Crisis Nursery, donating to their various fundraisers and with gifts in kind, and by volunteering with child care, special events and joining committees.
