PROGRAM

Cary introduced Jayne DeLuce, President and CEO of Visit Champaign County.  Jane talked about the new Champaign County African American Heritage Trail.

In 2020, two local educators, Angela Rivers and Barbara Suggs-Mason, approached Visit Champaign County with ideas for marking African American history sites throughout Champaign County.

After two years of planning, their website ccafricanamericanheritage.org, will debut on Sept. 22.

The first of 25, a marker will be installed at 1 Main to commemorate Frederick Douglass’ visit to Champaign County.  Future interactive markers will honor the Smith family of Broadlands, historical African American churches, Dr. Ellis Subdivision, St. Elmo Brady, the first African American to earn a PhD in Chemistry, and Bousfield Hall, named after Maudelle Tanner Brown Bousfield, the first female African American student at the University of Illinois.

There will be both a walking and a driving African American Heritage trail.   The walking tour will end at their signature project, a redeveloped Skelton Park.  The park will celebrate the influence of local African American musicians with a Music Hall of Fame Plaza.  Local artist Preston Jackson will create a sculpture for the plaza.
