ANNOUNCEMENTS

(notes provided by the erudite Mary Hodson).

There will be another Community Service opportunity with Feeding Our Kids from 10am until noon on July 24.

For those interested in International Service, there is an opportunity to join a Rotary sponsored trip to Mexico City and Guadalajara.  The Rotary Heart2Heart Project Mission trip will be  November 2-10.  Local Rotarians will provide a week of hospitality as well as opportunities to visit completed and in-progress matching grant projects and to discuss partnering with local Mexican clubs on pre-packaged global matching grant projects.   Several people from our District will be joining Rotarians from other Districts in our Zone on the trip.   Registration is required by August 15.   Contact tomd@travelleadersindy.com to be on the email list.

PROGRAM

Mary Kay gave a review of our club’s year.  Despite the pandemic, we welcomed two new members during this past Rotary year.   Mary Kay thanked Diana and Larry from the Membership Committee for their recruitment efforts.  New member Jerry Payonk took over secretarial duties and helped draft new by-laws.

She thanked the club for their generosity during the past year.   Members gave $4,500 to the Rotary Foundation, $1,000 to Polio Plus, $1,000 to the Navajo Water Project, and $500 to Shelter Box.   The fruit sale netted $9,000, of which $5,000 went to DSC, $1500 to our scholarship and $1,000 to Books for Eastern Congo.

CU Sunrise Rotarians rang bells for the Salvation Army and volunteered for two food repackaging events.

Mary Kay thanked Phyllis for initiating our District Grant for “Reach Out and Read”.   Finally, she thanked Darrell for Zoom support, Andrew for our great newsletter (you heard it here… second), and Scott for his photography. [Editor’s note: The Editorial staff of the C-U Sunrise Rotary Newsletter would also like to share a big thank you to some of the notetakers for their excellent work each week.  You know who you are.]

Oktay presided over the “passing of the gavel” from Mary Kay to Darrell.   Oktay thanked both of them for enabling our club to thrive during the pandemic and said that he looked forward to Darrell 2.0.

Darrell spoke of his reasons for joining Rotary.   He said Rotary was distinguished from other service clubs by its dedication to International Service.   Before joining, he and his wife had chaperoned a trip to India.   While there, he saw multiple signs labeling Rotary funded projects.   He said, “Rotarians know that we need to take care of one another and that means everyone.”

Last, Darrell thanked Mary Kay for her “sunny attitude” during the pandemic and welcomed Joe Rank to our club.

PROGRAM

Ondine introduced Jon L. Seydl as today’s speaker. Jon is the Director of the University of Illinois’ Krannert Art Museum. Jon became the director in 2018, and comes here after serving as the senior director of collections and programs of European Art at the Worcester Art Museum. He has a Master’s and PhD in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from Yale.

Jon began today’s program with a history of the University of Illinois’ Art Museum pointing to key years of growth which have led to the Krannert Art Museum (KAM) becoming the second largest general art museum in the State of Illinois.  KAM continues to have the dual purpose of serving both the University and the Community. KAM’s vast and varied collections of art, online collection access, continual changing of exhibitions, research and lab work, cross campus sharing and teaching activities makes it a valued member on campus and to the community. Jon has been leading KAM to be more open, keeping in touch and displaying all current art forms and more welcoming to all. His new focus is on disability culture.

This past year the museum has been closed due to the pandemic, but is now back open to the public from 10am to 4pm Tuesday through Saturday. Through its sponsors, donations and membership programs, KAM continues to grow and evolve to meet the today’s needs of the University and Community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

(notes provided by the unorthodox and unconventional Paul Conforti)

Former C-U Sunrise Rotarian Benny Lapid made a special appearance while he is in town for a photography job.

Mary’s reflection was a heartfelt tribute to Neal Chamberlain, and about the connectedness of Rotary throughout the lives of friends and family of all Rotarians, even after they are not here with us anymore.

We will have an End of Rotary Year Social from 5-7pm on Thursday, 6/24/21 at the home of Mary Kay and Charlie Smith. The address is 1607 Sandpiper Ct, Champaign.

Mary Kay, on behalf of CU Sunrise, made a giant check presentation to Champaign Central High School graduate Kyleah Rogers in the amount of $1,500. Kyleah has been accepted to UIUC.

District Governor Mike Step honored Paul Harris Fellows, including:

Vicki Patton (on behalf of Rob Patton)

Mary Kay Smith (+1)

Bob LaCharite (+2)

Charlie Smith (+3)

Allan Penwell (+4)

PROGRAM

District Governor Mike talked about several satellite clubs in our district. Satellite clubs are clubs that form with under 20 members. Satellite clubs function similar to regular clubs but can have modified procedures. One such club serves Downs/LeRoy where members can bring friends and family. Another satellite club in Bloomington meets twice per month. Called the Pub Club, the first meeting of the month is held in a pub in which a project is planned, and the second meeting is the project.

Special Recognition: Mike explained that a District Governor can recognize outstanding contributions to a club, to a district and to Rotaries around the world. Mike presented to Phyllis the District Governor’s award for her inspirational service above self to our club and district.

Mike presented Phyllis with a certificate and a local artisan made (Paris, IL) inscribed glass Rotary mug painted with the Rotary colors representing opening the doors of opportunity.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

(notes provided by the erudite Mary Hodson)

June Bucket Bucks will go to the servers at LODGIC.   Bucket Bucks collected in July will go to the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

President Mary Kay announced that Cary will be our new social committee chair.   Scott Paceley will serve CU Sunrise as President for the 2022-2023 Rotary Year.  Instead of purchasing awards this year, the club purchased CU Sunrise masks for all of the members.

Phyllis announced the completion of our District Grant project.  Despite the pandemic, Frances Nelson completed 871 child wellness checks during 2020.  Our grant provided 809 books to be given to the children, half in Spanish and half in English.   During each wellness check, the physician talked about the importance of reading to children and presented each child with a book.

The club also participated with other clubs in a project with our Peace Scholar Shannon O Rourke Kasali’s libraries in the Congo.   Charlie announced that 800 books have been delivered to Goma.

President Elect Darrell announced that he is planning to have a charter event in October and another karaoke fundraiser.

Congratulations to Phyllis who is celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary.

Our scholarship winner from Central High School and Governor Mike Step will be at our next meeting.

PROGRAM

Charlie introduced Theresa from LODGIC.   Theresa talked about what she has learned and how their services morphed during the pandemic.

Kids Camp transitioned to remote learning.   The next to resume was office services to their existing clients as well as displaced workers who needed a place to work.  Restaurant services opened gradually.   Office workers meet every other Monday for “Member Mingles”.   LODGIC is open for Happy Hour on Thursdays and Fridays and dinner on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.   They will have a new chef and menu starting July 1.

Two new LODGIC facilities opened during the pandemic, one in Madison, WI, and one in Louisville, KY.    Madison is home to three large healthcare providers.   Healthcare workers needed childcare so Kids Camp was the first service provided.   Kentucky licensing has stalled the opening of their Kids Camp, but their bar and restaurant are open.
