“When we recall the past, we usually find that it is the simplest things – not the great occasions – that in retrospect give off the greatest glow of happiness.” ― Bob Hope

 “Men

[and women] make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” ― Harry S. Truman

PROGRAM

Phyllis introduced this morning’s speaker, Derek Fultz who is the Director of Facilities for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the U of I. Derek was directly involved in the recent remodeling project of the Natural History Building on campus. Built in 1892, the Natural History Building is the third oldest building on campus, and it was designed by U of I graduate architect Nathan Ricker. Ricker was the first graduate of an American architectural program in a higher education program.

The Natural History Building has had numerous remodeling projects in its lifetime, including a 2009 project to restore its exterior and roof. In 2010, engineers inspecting the building found many structural problems. Closing half the building due to these problems, it was determined that a massive remodeling project was needed and this project began.

Following historic preservation guidelines, ADA requirements, high levels of energy efficiency construction practices, and the need to serve students and research efforts into the 21st century, the work began on this 148,000 sq. ft. building. Funds were gathered from 15 different sources to provide the necessary $78.3 million to complete the project.

This completed project opened for use this semester. Derek presented many before and after photographs of the construction work. He also explained the complexity of working with user input during the planning and design phases as well as during the construction with many unforeseen existing conditions that occur when remodeling such a large 122 year old building. Reusing much of the existing wood trim, stairs, doors, flooring, and wood coffered ceilings, the building combines that with a sensitive selection of new materials, finishes, state of the art mechanical and electrical systems and furnishings. The end result is indeed one of the best examples of a high quality preserved historic building on campus. The building is now a space that students and researchers can use and enjoy today and into the future.
