“I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.”  ― Leonardo da Vinci

“There is nothing so pitiful as a young cynic because he has gone from knowing nothing to believing nothing.” ― Maya Angelou

SPEAKER

Our speaker, Alexis Tate, has authored a book “An Illini Place; Building the University of Illinois Campus” which will be published in May to help celebrate the University’s 150th year.  She has been involved in public relations and speech writing for 22 ½ years and has taught media and public relations at the university for 13 years.  Her presentation today was on the “Secret Space; the University of Illinois Quad”.

Her book is the history of the places rather than the intellectual history of the university.  The Quad is one of 20 places that she considers iconic. She credits Edmund Jane James, president from 1904 to 1920 for its creation.  In 1867 the first building had been built on University Avenue.  In 1868 classes had started and 150 more acres were purchased. A crazy idea that did not come to pass was an 1898 proposal to build an artificial lake in what would become the middle of the Quad.

By 1904 the university had grown from the north to the south which it still does today.  At this time money for an auditorium had been promised by the state and James wanted an all-encompassing plan for the campus before siting it.  The 1905 plan by Clarence Blackall not only lays out the form of the main quadrangle but includes quadrangles in the north and south.  The 1980’s plan for the engineering campus by Sasaki Associates mimics and reinforces the 1905 plan.

The original provided a central axis with buildings lined up and a mall or vast green space with curvilinear paths.  $250 was provided to commission an expert, John C. Olmsted to approve the plan.  By 1921, 10 buildings had been built along the quad and 13 are there today.  The 1905 plan formed subsequent thinking about the repetition of quadrangles with spines down the center of the campus
