ANNOUNCEMENTS
(Notes provided by Allan Penwell)
March 4th is Read Across America.  Michelle is calling for volunteers to help out.

March 11th is the Savoy Rotary Club Pancake Breakfast at the First Baptist Church in Savoy.  Larry may be at our next meeting to sell tickets, or you can buy them at the door.

March 23rd is our club assembly to discuss our Visioning planning.  Please be sure to attend as this is important for the future of our club.

There is no morning meeting on March 30th.  We are having a social at Krannert Uncorked on the same day at 5:30 p.m.  These gathers are always fun (especially when Robb starts dancing).

The All Rotary area meeting is set for 11:30am on April 26 at the Round Barn Center.  We will cancel our meeting that week (4/27) so please plan on attending the All Rotary meeting.

May 6-7 is the annual conference of District 6490 which, this year, is conveniently held in Champaign.  Mark your calendars and think about at least attending the lunch which is a great experience.

Ata sent an email to club members regarding Meltem, a visiting Rotarian from Turkey, who is organizing a painting contest for children ages 6-10.  See Ata’s email for details.

Reuben introduced Joe Smith who is the director of The St. Elmo Brady STEM Academy. The Academy will receive our bucket money for April.

PROGRAM

Phyllis introduced Garrett Anderson who is a retired U.S. Army sergeant who was injured in Iraq by an IED on October 16, 2005.  Garrett is on the staff of  The Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education at UIUC as established by the Chez Family Foundation.  Garrett was the first in his family to get a college degree (ISU).  Garrett’s wife is an attorney in C-U and is a Rotarian.

There are over 300 veterans on campus, and The Center provides a place for them to meet and coordinate services they may need such as counseling for PTSD.  There are also 14 room facilities for vets to stay along with work out facilities.  It is a place to decompress and talk with other veterans who have had similar experiences.  Garrett explained there is nothing like it at any other university in the country.

There is considerable information about The Center at the following link: http://testwoundedvetcenter.ahs.illinois.edu/Default.aspx
