PROGRAM

Bob introduced Karen Pickard, a volunteer with The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen.

The soup kitchen was founded in 1980 by Ellen McDowell.   In 1989, they bought a house on Randolph.   Due to the size of the house, one group of guests had to wait outside in the elements while another group ate.

In 2009, they moved to New Covenant Church.   However, there, they could only serve meals Monday through Friday.

Late last year, the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen moved to their newly renovated space at 116 N University Ave, site of the old Emerald City Lounge.  Every day, they serve an entree, three kinds of soup, salads and desserts.   Karen was very proud to note that the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen is fully staffed by volunteers.

Champaign County has a poverty rate of 23.4 percent, the third highest in the State.

Karen related many stories about the guests of the soup kitchen.  She said “Our guests are fantastic people. Some are homeless but most are working poor.”   Oftentimes guests are single parents who can’t afford to buy fresh fruits and vegetables for their children.   Other guests are elderly citizens who are looking for a meal and socialization.

She also expressed thanks to many groups that donate food.  El Toro Restaurant donates food to serve 200 once per month.  Panera donates bagels, coffee cake and rolls.  Arby’s donates and serves meals.  Piato Cafe donates one meal per month.  Michael’s, Classic Events, Hendrick House and the UIUC dorms all donate leftover food.

She also thanked CU Sunrise for donating oranges.

The soup kitchen currently needs volunteers on the weekends.  Go to their website to find out how you can help.
